The Common Sense Pill

"Common sense ain't common." -Will Rogers, American Cowboy and Actor, Will Rogers books//

Life would be a whole lot simpler if there was some sort of "common sense" pill that could be taken like a daily vitamin or energy drink. Politics, relationships and education are the fertile grounds for complexity to grow. The saying 'It would take an act of Congress' to achieve something came about for a reason - Congress is good at drawing things out, adding layers and feeding bureaucracy. In relationships, the saying 'making a mountain out of a mole hill' is particularly true, as most people are terrible listeners and don't recognize opportunities to end arguments and seek simple resolutions at the onset. Education, while an enlightening endeavor, confuses the mind and complicates thought, as most text books use three hundred pages when thirty would suffice. Common sense, as Rogers says, could help simplify all of these things, and yet it is seemingly avoided at all costs. Why? Because people who complicate things feel important. They create problems so that they can fix them. They hear the voice of reason and simplicity, but they choose to ignore it for selfish reasons. And so, common sense is sacrificed for vanity's sake. And what are the most tragic losses of this reality? Happiness, harmony and humor. Rogers was a comedian, and he portrayed life in simple terms. He seemed to understand that making things complicated took the fun out of them. I tend to agree. Rather than agonizing over the details today, take the opportunity to relax and have fun. Common sense tells us all that life should not be so hard.
